Partnership aims to implement innovative and sustainable industrial processes in mining engineering projects in the global market
2024, March – New Wave, a global technology holding based in Luxembourg and focused on developing innovative and sustainable routes and technologies for the mining and steel sector, has just established a strategic alliance with AtkinsRéalis, a world-leading company in professional and project management dedicated to engineering a better future for the planet and people.
The agreement aims to promote the development and execution of innovative and sustainable solutions for mineral and metal production facilities, in order to increase opportunities, competitiveness and market reach, taking advantage of the skills of each company. New Wave has extensive experience in the sustainable processing of strategic minerals, with green patents already granted, while AtkinsRéalis specializes in plant evaluations, engineering and design studies, purchasing and construction management, startup and commissioning, among other activities.
Furthermore, the alliance aims to promote greater market access to the solutions offered by the companies, through joint marketing and customer satisfaction efforts. With global operations, the agreement focuses on reaching companies in the mining sector present in regions such as the United States, Canada, Latin America, Central America and Brazil. The annual production of bauxite waste is around 150 million tons per year, which corresponds to more than 30 billion dollars in valuable materials, which can be accessed through Wave Aluminum technology. Thanks to New Wave technology, huge volumes of laterite ore could be used to produce intermediate products that could be used in the battery industry.
The two companies have already been working together on some projects in Brazil, such as the Niquelândia Unit (GO), with an installed capacity of 2 million tons per year, focused on nickel processing, in the process of concluding the acquisition process, in a transaction with the Brazilian Aluminum Company – CBA. Engineering and works, which will be supported by AtkinsRéalis, will begin after the contract is concluded, scheduled for 2024. In addition, AtkinsRéalis is also participating in the engineering development for the construction of the first semi-industrial plant focused on waste processing of bauxite, in Barcarena (PA), the result of a partnership signed between Wave Aluminum and Hydro Alunorte.
“We are excited to announce this strategic alliance with AtkinsRéalis, which marks a significant step towards excellence in the mining and steel segment, contributing to a more efficient and sustainable sector. This collaboration is aligned with New Wave’s internationalization plan, which projects significant growth with the partnership. We want to invest in sustainable mining initiatives for Wave Aluminum and Wave Nickel”, says Gustavo Emina, CEO and Founder of New Wave.
“We are pleased to continue deploying our global, integrated, full lifecycle mining capabilities through our ongoing collaboration with New Wave, as demand for raw materials needed to transform the world’s energy systems increases ”, says Maria de Lourdes Bahia, Vice President of Minerals and Metals in Latin America at AtkinsRéalis. “Working together will allow us to provide solutions and create projects that will have long-term viability.”
“The partnership between New Wave and AtkinsRéalis allows us to move forward, accessing the right resources to deliver sustainability solutions to customers around the world,” says Cesar Inostroza, CEO of AtkinsRéalis, Minerals and Metals.
